Retirement of the WOW hosting network in 2026
We have an important update about the Weather Observations Website (WOW). After over a decade of supporting crowd-sourced weather observations and citizen science, the UK Met Office will start retiring WOW in January, with full decommissioning planned for late 2026.
The WOW network is hosted and managed by the UK Met Office since its launch in 2011.
Met Éireann partnered with UK Met Office to send our weather station data to WOW, and to utilise the WOW API. In 2019 Met Éireann launched an Irish website, WOW-IE, as part of the global WOW network, where the public can view the worldwide network of weather observations, and upload their weather station data to WOW.
WOW has been a cornerstone for enabling countless individuals to contribute weather data from across the UK, Ireland and globally, thanks to our international partners. The data collected through WOW has been instrumental in improving forecast accuracy, supporting climate science, and fostering collaboration between professionals and the public.
We are incredibly grateful for the invaluable data and support you have provided over the years. During this transition period towards WOW decommissioning, the UK Met Office is focusing on maintaining the security and stability of the platform to ensure it remains a safe and reliable resource for all users.
When WOW is decommissioned, all weather station observations on the WOW-IE map and Data Display pages will no longer be uploaded and displayed on WOW-IE, or on any WOW partner website via the existing UK Met Office WOW network.
However, as your contributions are extremely valuable, Met Éireann is currently working with European partners to explore an alternative suitable solution for the upload of Met Éireann’s and interested weather station owners’ data, in tandem with the retirement of the WOW network.
